Prompt design checklist

Prompts fail quietly when the structure assumes too much, asks for too much, or hides critical constraints in a paragraph no one will maintain.

What to check before shipping

  • Is the objective explicit?
  • Are the guardrails visible rather than implied?
  • Is the model asked to decide something a human should decide?
  • Would another team member understand why the prompt is structured this way?
A prompt is part of the system. If nobody can maintain it, it is already a problem.
